Hi, I'm Michael Junkins, thanks for visiting the site and taking the time to read this! Junk has been a vision of mine for many years and I'm so excited that it's become a reality last year, 2024.
I'm an actively performing jazz guitarist living in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. I'm committed to collaborating with as many musicians as possible and working hard to create opportunities for myself and the many talented players who live and work in this area with me. It's essential to me that this art form is given a place to be expressed and as a result, I hope, valued and appreciated.
in 2019, I began curating a jazz series in the Lion's Den in Stockbridge MA. In addition to having different trios perform in the "Den" every Wednesday, I have had a Sunday residency there since 2021 inviting different musicians each week to perform with me as a quartet and sometimes quintet. It was here that I began playing with and meeting the musicians who would become the members of Junk.
Each member of Junk plays an essential role in shaping our unique sound. We wouldn’t be who we are without every member's voice. While it might sound clichéd, this artistic collaboration wasn’t a matter of chance. I’m honored to perform alongside these remarkable musicians and deeply appreciate their dedication to this project.
You already know about me :)
Will's compositions are the backbone of the group's repertoire and his energy is truly infectious! He is a world-class musician working as a percussionist in the Boston Symphony Orchestra for over 30 years. In addition to the BSO and Junk, Will is an active member of the Ron Bosse Group. He is a masterful musician and every gig we play together is a lesson for me!
Dan is the kind of guy who always seems to play the perfect thing at the right time! We're just getting to know each other, and with every performance we play together, I'm continually taken aback by his thoughtfulness as an improviser and his pristine execution of the repertoire.
I've known Silvain the longest. We've been playing together since 2019. He's one of the most musically "open" people I know and is always trying to make each performance the best it can be every moment we're playing together. In addition to being a complete "rock" in the rhythm section, his skill as an improviser is unmatched. His solos are imaginative, sophisticated, and uniquely Silvain.
He's arguably the busiest working drummer in the Berkshires. Conor's contribution to this music is paramount; he sets the foundation for everything that happens in the music and because of his intuition and incredible execution, makes everyone a better player!
I'm hoping we will be in the studio to record in the coming months. I plan on posting some live performances soon.
Below is a promotional video for a performance at West Art in Lancaster, PA, from last year. It's the beginning of Will's composition called "Mouse House"
